Soon after his birth he moved to Sungai Acheh, Penang, where he began schooling in Sungai Acheh School in 1949. On completion of his standard three education, he was chosen to continue his studies in an English medium Anglo-Chinse School, Nibung Tebal.A year later, he moved to Bukit Mertajam, his mother’s hometown, and entered High School.
Received early education at the Bukit Mertajam High School and Maktab Melayu Kuala Kangsar. Then continue the study up to the rank of diplomas at the University of Michigan Doctor of Philosophy, American Sarekat, in 1973. In 1978 he was appointed as Professor of Literature at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He received the State Award in 1991 Sasterawan. In 1997 he received the Award S.E.A. Write Award in Bangkok. Now he became a literary pensyarah Universiti Sains Malaysia.
Among his published work was Poems Immigrants (poetry, 1973), is also My World (poetry 1977), The Travel Book Grace II (poetry, 1975), Malay History Poems (poetry, 1981), From Across the Self ( poetry, 1982), When, Or and then (poetry, 1988), The Nature of Southeast (poetry, 1993), Tradition and Change in Contemporary Malay-Indonesian Poetry (review, 1977), Experience Poetry (review, 1984), Mirror of Self ( study, 1986), Puitika Malay Letters: A Consideration (review, 1989), Poem Challenge Singapore (review, 1994), A campfire at Lake (poetry, 1996), Literacy Age (poetry, 1998), Crossing History (review, 1999), and Puitika Malay Letters (review, 2000).
